The shop is, as always at… Gnomespun Yarn and Fiber Arts

Lots of fun stuff!

We have a new fiber, Hampshire!

Colorways: Balloon Flower, Butterfly Bush, Deep Sea, Elphaba, Leprechaun’s Luck, The Princess’ Petticoats, Rust, Sapphire Depths, Trumpet Vine

Hampshire!

And a new blend, “New England Blend

Colorways: Balloon Flower, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Heart of the Green, Kunzite, Midnight Magic, Northwest Passage, Skinnydipping, Soft Moose, The King in Yellow

New England Blend!

And an old standby back in lovely roving, Tunis!

Colorways: Balloon Flower, Barn Door, Bryophyta, Happy Goth, Sunburst, Wolf

Tunis!

And then some old standbys, BFL, Cheviot, Shetland, and Rambouillet

Colorways: Autumn Gold, Deep Sea, Lobelia, Balloon Flower, Deep Lobelia, Deep Paprika, Heady Brew

Other fiber!

Hampshire: A true downs wool breed, originally from the Hampshire downs of England. Lofty and difficult to felt. Hampshire sheds water and has excellent memory. A good fiber for socks, warm sweaters, and mittens that will wear well.

New England Blend: This is a blend of local wools handpicked by me to be ideal for socks and similar purposes. Dorset, Tunis, and Hampshire, for their downs wool loft and difficulty felting. Romney for a bit of luster and tensile strength. Jacob for a bit of heathering and a delicate halo. Carefully picked, this blend spins up into a suprisingly soft and lofty yarn.

I’m working on samples for the others, but I started with some 3-ply longdraw spun, high twist, sock yarn from the New England Blend.

New England Blend!

New England Blend!

I think it’s going to be an excellent fiber. I might even spin myself a pair of socks!

As you can see, the pups found this to be very boring. Poor things.

We're bored, Dad!

That’s all for now!

Shop is, as always here

Lots of new fiber, finally!

Repeatability!: Some colorways have actual recipes now! Repeatable colorways are noted in their descriptions and I will soon be putting up a page here of repeatable colorways. These can be requested and made in larger batches if desired. Of course semi-solids will be more consistent across very large batches than variegates.

Fibers: Dorset, Perendale, Wensleydale, Gotland, Finn, BFl, and Shetland

Colorways: The Flickering Flame, Firebird, Baby Goth, Butterfly Bush, Deep Sea, Falling In, Fruit Sorbet, I am a Bunny, Little Red Riding Hood, Mermaid, Moose, Paprika, Peach Melba, Platycodon, Pocket Change, Raspberry Beret, and The Princess’ Petticoats

New Fiber 8-5-2011

Enjoy!

Some notes:

It’s come to my attention that some of my darker colors are crocking more than I would like. Translation, when you go to set your spun yarn, unbound color comes off but doesn’t change the underlying color of the yarn. So I’m changing my rinsing protocol for the darker colors. This will affect fiber in updates after this one.

Someone asked for a photo of the tie-up for my loom. I’ll take one and post it shortly.

I think that’s about it…

Gratuitous puppy. This is Gobo, relaxing at an overlook on a recent hike.

So most, if not all, of the Mythic Club people should have received their first club entry by now.

It was, as the title suggests, Anubis, the psychopomp (guide of the dead) of ancient Egypt, and one time King of the Underworld (abdicating as Osiris grew in popularity). (For those who missed it, that’s what the random odd “clues” were on the blog before)

Beyond the, “Ooh shiny” the club actually does affect the regular storegoers of Gnomespun. Why?

Recipes.

This is my first experience with doing large batches of an identical (within reason) colorway, and thus I have actually begun to develop repeatable recipes for some colorways. This is a good thing for you! It means I can actually do large batches, and when you get “Falling In” it’ll be basically the same as any other time you get it, rather than variable!

Of course there will still be *some* variation, but not nearly what there’s been in the past. But don’t worry! Not all the colorways will be reciped, I’ll still be doing plenty of colors by the slap-dash creative methods I’ve used in the past.

So, anyway, Anubis.

Anubis

Here, he is represented in wensleydale, a longwool with a luster befitting the pharaohs in rich pure jackal head black, lapis blue, and gold.

Recipe dyeing as an interesting experience. There’s always one batch that decide to not quite look right.

Anubis

Then of course I had to make the stitch markers I promised. In obsidian or lava, lapis, and brass.

Stitch Markers

Then time to bag up the fiber and markers…

The Stuff

Then get the description all written out.

Everything for the club

And send it out!

Then, all that remained was to wait and see what people did with it! Here’s some examples so far…

Rhynwa split her fiber down the middle to preserve color changes. Rhynwa’s Anubis, in a lovely montage:

Anubis

PaA split his for “Fractal Spinning” (which is really more like an exponential progression). ProgrammerAtArms’ Anubis:

Anubis

Anubis

ABA also split hers for fractal spinning, but spun a slightly thicker yarn for a different effect. AbqBalancingAct’s Anubis:

Anubis

So that’s the first club! First clue for the second club is that one of the stones for the stitch markers is carnelian. More clues to follow.

And your gratuitous puppy! BAAAAAAAALL!
